The Modem Line Tap, MLT2400-A is an analog data analyzer that translates telephone data communications into standard ASCII characters for display on a PC screen. It provides the POS industry and others with a non-intrusive means of monitoring the telephone line communications between two modems.
• Passive Connection
- The MLT2400-A (Modem Line Tap) is a passive telephone line monitoring device. It is used to decode analog signals sent by interconnecting modems into equivalent ASCII data. The MLT data output can be viewed using a PC with a serial port or a data scope analyzer.
• Hardware Independent
- Since the MLT is externally connected to the terminal itself, programmers can gain easy access to the communications data without becoming intimately familiar with the hardware used.
• Transaction Monitor
- A typical use of the MLT is to monitor transactions between a POS terminal and its interconnected Host processor. The telephone cable normally connected to the POS terminal is moved to the MLT input RJ-11. Another cable, with RJ-11 connectors at each end, is used to connect the MLT loop through input to the POS terminal. Then the serial output from the MLT is routed to the PC

RS232 PC Interface
The MLT 2400 uses an RS232 to connect to a PC for data analysis. This connection is at 9600bs. Communications data is sent across the RS232 connection for the PC application to display. Originate and Answer identification is also provided depending on the mode selected.
Serial Test Software
Serial Test Software, from Frontline Test Equipment, allows users to easily view the data from the MLT2400. It also allows storage of capture data to hard disk, evaluate timing, and view data in several formats.
Originate vs. Answer
Although any communications package can be used to monitor the MLT data flow, the supplied communications program allows the user to differentiate the originate from the answer side messages by using different colors for display. The answer and originate signals also appear on separate lines of the output connector to allow interconnection to a data scope.

Product overview:
The MLT2400-A Modem Line Tap is a test device providing a means of monitoring computer to computer communications without disturbing either of the systems being monitored, or the communications media.
It encompasses two distinctly separate monitoring inputs. The primary input is used to monitor standard modem audio transmitted over telephone lines. Housed within the MLT are two modem circuits that are programmed for "originate" and "answer". The high impedance bridge placed across a phone line prevents any interference to normal working phone lines. Whether incoming or outgoing calls are being made, both sides of the communications can be monitored.
The second input of operation of the MLT is used for monitoring RS-232 communications. With this selection for input the MLT places RS-232 line receivers across both the DTE and DCE sides of the lines, making it possible to monitor either or both sides of the communications.
A special software monitor program is available for the MLT2400-A to assist in debugging by providing special string displays for control characters as well as source indicators when operating in combined output.
Front panel settings are stored in battery backed memory. When power is applied the system will initialize with the last known selections.
