Introduction PortMaster Communications Servers are high-speed network access devices designed to operate in multi-protocol network environments. The hardware and software capabilities provide shared network access to printers, modems and other peripherals attached to the PortMaster; network access to terminals, X-terminals and remote users using dial-up internetworking. The PortMaster Communications Server provides the following features and capabilities:
Expandable 10-to-30 port model (in 10 port increments) Compact 10 port only model Built-in SL/IP and PPP (interoperable with most implementations) Supports 115.2 Kb maximum data rate sustained on all 30 ports Multi-line load balancing for vastly increased performance Centronics compatible parallel printer port Thick, Thin, and Twisted Pair Ethernet ports Host Device Emulation On-line configuration Graphical administration software Advanced security (RADIUS, packet filtering, and dialback) Full network monitoring SNMP MIB-2 (Simple Network Management Protocol) Flash memory for better performance and easy upgrades Network Independent booting (local booting) Support for routing Novell’s IPX protocol IPX Packet Filtering SAP Service Filtering Enhanced diagnostic capability Extended debugging facilities Multiprotocol support for remote nodes and remote networks New Command mode features New Personal Computer based administration tools
PortMaster operates as a smart communications device attached to an Ethernet network. It utilizes the TCP/IP and SPX/IPX networking protocols to communicate and establish virtual login and device services on host computers. Each of the ten to thirty PortMaster ports is independently configurable to support all types of RS-423 and RS-232 communications devices. The parallel port provides standard Centronics parallel communications for many printers.
Operating Modes
Advanced Dial-Up Internetworking
By using modems and standard telephone lines, local area networks can be economically and seamlessly connected. The PortMaster uses industry standard protocols (SLIP and PPP) to turn the PortMaster into a full multiprotocol router. This makes it compatible with all computers and networks which use the TCP/IP or SPX/IPX protocols. In addition, by incorporating an on-demand feature, dial-up telephone lines are only in use when there is data to be sent between networks. This reduces overall operating costs and increases the number of locations which can be tied together through a small number of modems.
Full Featured Remote Access
To support a growing number of telecommuters and field based portable computers requiring access to network resources such as file servers and printers, the PortMaster Communications Servers combine full-featured remote network access with comprehensive login security features like multi-level password protection automatic dial-back, TCP/IP packet filtering, and the RADIUS authentication service. In addition, network users can gain access to external services through PortMaster managed modems. As a result, a small pool of modems can handle both dial-in and dial-out tasks which can reduce costs.
Cost-Effective Terminal Server
PortMaster Communications Servers offer a flexible low cost method of adding large numbers of terminals to computers. Each of the ports is independently configurable, and with host device emulation, you can easily configure a port to operate exactly like the built-in serial port of any workstation on the network. Each serial port can be configured to operate in four modes:
User Login Mode - Displays a user login prompt to establish a session on a host computer. In this mode, the PortMaster provides speed matching of one of three speeds from 300 through 115,200 baud.
Host Device Mode - Serial ports function as a UNIX tty device. The host accesses the port through a standard pseudo tty driver as if the port were physically connected as a hardware device. In addition ports can be accessed directly via available network services such as telnet.
Two Way Mode - In this mode, both User Login and Host Device Mode are supported. When a session has been established in user login mode, host device mode is suspended. When the host device is being directly accessed, user login mode is suspended. This allows for applications such as UUCP to utilize one modem in both directions.
Dialnet Mode - This mode allows the establishment of SLIP or PPP network connections over dedicated leased lines or over normal telephone lines using modems. The ports can be configured in any number of the above combinations. The parallel port, P0, functions in only the Host Device Mode.
Smart Features The intelligence of the PortMaster allows it to be configured and monitored from a remote computer. By utilizing the a graphical user interface, all functions of PortMaster can be accessed with the click of a mouse. This includes installation, network setup, port configurations, and I/O monitoring. If a graphical display device is not available, all configuration parameters may also be set using a character mode terminal interface.
